Happy Friday! Guys, I’m really stoked – this time next week, I will be in the Finger Lakes in New York with two of my nearest and dearest besties who I haven’t seen in far too long!! I cannot wait! So pumped. Anyway, let’s get right into what I’ve been feeling this week:

2. Svelte Organic Protein Shake in Cappuccino

I have to give my gym buddy R credit for this one, who recently introduced me to these supremely amazing shakes. Since we are in the 5 am wake up crew, it’s hard to eat that early in the morning (at least for me) before our morning workouts start at 5:45 am. These shakes are the perfect quick pre-work out pick me up before you start doing burpees at the crack of dawn. And of course they are vegan, gluten free and made from non-GMO soy. Each shake contains 11 grams of protein, 20% of your daily fiber intake, only 6 grams of sugar and clock in at 180 calories. We down half of our shake before our workout, and save the second half for our commute to work when our stomachs are literally digesting themselves. Ever since I read the study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning ResearchΒΉ that suggests that consuming some protein and carbohydrates prior to your training session can reduce the amount of muscle damage caused by intense exercise, I try to put something good into my stomach before my morning workout. These shakes have helped me to be a little more consistent with eating before working out, and are so delicious they go down easy first thing in the morning. The first time I had one, I downed the whole thing because it was that tasty (and then I kinda wanted to vom after doing dozens of Stop, Drop & Roll Burpees in class – hence why I stick with only half πŸ˜‰ ).

I picked some of this up from Tar-jay because I was looking for a lip balm with an SPF to bring to the beach. I haven’t had much luck with some of the other brands I tried out (like the brand that rhymes with Hurts Knees, whose SPF lip balm made my lips look white, and me look like a corpse). This one is decent – it’s all natural, cruelty-free and petroleum/paraben free. The pomegranate flavor is two thumbs up, and the moisturizing aloe, cocoa, and shea butter combo is very hydrating. This lip balm has definitely earned a place in my beach bag this summer. πŸ™‚

Well hello again, Friday! It’s so nice to see you. I hope all of you guys had an amazing week – I know I’m glad the best day of the week is finally here!! Also – I just want to put this out there right up front: you guys are THE best. Even though I’ve been an unresponsive donkey, when I see your comments and likes roll in, it really brightens my day (more than you know). You guys give me a reason to write and express myself creatively everyday, even amidst the chaos that is my life right now, and I really, really appreciate all of you. Love you guys! 2. Ross Livermore Band

On a whim, last night was my “night off,” I got to peace out of Stressville for a few hours, so I went to Toad in Somerville, MA. It’s pretty much the best place on Earth – a tiny bar/club that hosts live music EVERY SINGLE NIGHT for free. And all of the music is AMAZING (I have yet to see a band that I felt “meh” about). So, my friend and I met up there and we grooved to some live tunes. The first band was fun, but I was pretty much wiped out from my week and ready to bounce, so I asked the bartender Rachel if the second band was worth sticking around for. Her face lit up and said, “Yes! They are really good. Kind of like funk/rock – definitely worth it!” I took her word for it, and we stayed. Um, Rachel – understatement of the century – the second band (RLB) blew it out of the water. They sucked me into Groupie Land when their second song was a cover of The Band’s “The Weight” – which thanks to my childhood involuntary/intensive study on the music of the 1960’s and 1970’s, I can recite the lyrics from memory (dude, don’t get me wrong – I am extremely grateful for my hippie parents’ musical tutelage because now I don’t listen to sh*tty music and I’m never afraid to get down with my funky self in public). RLB = amazeballs. In the words of the 20-year old bouncer, “That dude is so crisp on the drums.” Yes, yes – he is (I also wrote that bouncer’s quote down on a coaster because I felt it really summed them up – crisp, on point). Everyone shredded their solos and I had both hands up in the air like the praise emoji all night.Β  If they come to your area – run, don’t walk – to get a ticket and put your dancing shoes on because they will have you on your feet jamming out in the first 20 seconds of the first song. SO. FREAKIN. GOOD. Check out their website here – they have tons of free music!

3. These Blinding Capri Pants

I’m loving Beyond Yoga‘s summer color palate – I love me some bright, retina-scarring colors. These are no exception.The summer palate is full of super vibrant, happy colors and perfect for spring/summer. You can’t go wrong with a classic capri legging for all of your sweat sessions. One of the things I’m into re: Beyond Yoga merchandise is the material used. It’s top quality, fade resistant, and durable. Love! ❀

4. Nuttzo Nut Butter

Um, you guys need this. You all know I’m a self-professed Justin’s almond butter fanatic, but this stuff is bomb and is edging out the competition. It combines seven different seeds and nuts in every jar, and comes in both crunchy and smooth. I like the combination of nuts – since each nut has different vitamin and mineral attributes, you get to hit the high notes all in one shot. It’s organic, there’s no added sugar or oil, it’s vegan, kosher, gluten-free and is packed with protein, healthy fats and ALA (there’s some flax in every jar). Also, I love that it comes upside down so that when you stir it, all the messy oils that usually splash all over my counter are at the bottom of the jar – YES LIFE!

Ingredients

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries
  • 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder (I use Vega)
  • 1 – 2 Tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 tsp matcha
  • a few shakes of cinnamon
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla hemp milk

Directions

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Enjoy! πŸ˜€

Nommmmmsssss! I had one of these after my uber intense Sweaturday workout and it was so delicious. It’s the perfect breakfast on the go (or second breakfast, as it was in my case). I hope you enjoy it!

I definitely needed something great to refuel as I was up way too late and dancing my socks off at the Galactic concert at the House of Blues in Boston on Friday night. They are a really sweet funk band from NOLA, and have an amazing vocalist touring with them. It was EPIC (and it got prettyyyy funkyyy, so I was really feeling it Saturday morning). If their tour stops at a venue near you, I highly recommend checking them out (I had a BLAST, they have great energy and a rad vibe). You can see a short clip of their music on my Instagram. It was also my nephew’s first birthday party on Saturday! My sister put together an amazing St. Patty’s Day themed spread (my nephew is a St. Patty’s Day baby) for the party. Happy Friiiiiiiiiiday! We made it! I am especially excited this Friday because I’ll have friends in town and have a super fun weekend ahead of me. I don’t know about you guys, but this week totally flew by – I can’t believe Friday is already here! Woohoo! Now let’s get right down to what I’m feeling this week:

1. Spill-Proof Wine Glasses

I am a certified klutz and have knocked over many-a-wine glasses in my day (I’m no pro-level red wine drinker a la Olivia Pope *sigh* – how is she always surrounded by white clothes and furniture and never spills a drop?) and I saw these stemless “Saturn Wine Glasses” designed by San Francisco’s Superduperstudio and immediately thought: GENIUS. MUST HAVE. I am mesmerized by the design concept; it is so simple but literally took until 2015 for us to get there. Finally! You can basically knock your wine glass over and have it roll all over your table without spilling a drop of vino. Yup, everyone needs one.

2. A Little Incident at Alden & Harlow

Last Friday night, two Queens of the Morons showed up at this lovely, upscale and amazingly delicious restaurant in Harvard Square (the chef-owner of which, Michael Scelfo, also happens to be the brother of someone I know), and were rude, obnoxious, insulting and abusive to the staff, and refused to leave – all while loudly threatening to leave a bad Yelp review. In turn, the owner posted an Instagram photo calling them out for their bad behavior. Should Scelfo have reacted by posting a picture of them and publicly shaming them? Perhaps not. But this should teach everyone a lesson: don’t be an asshole (because just maybe, you’ll get what’s coming to you). Your servers, bartenders, hostesses, etc. are all human beings who are doing their job in their workplace. I get really fired up when I see people being treated with disrespect period, but especially when they are simply trying to do their job – so unnecessary. Regardless of what happened, I’m happy to see an owner stick up for his staff. Go, Mike!

3. Saucony Peregrine 4 Trail Running Shoes

I finally found my second half! I’m really rolling the dice here and going for it: I’m running the Rosaryville Off-Road Half Marathon in Maryland on March 29, 2015. It’s a trail half, with supposedly fun and challenging terrain that’s still beginner friendly (I have run zero trail races and only one half, so this is sure to be a fun adventure, woot!). I know better than to try and run a trail half marathon in my road-only racing sneakers, so (since I obviously need more sneakers), I just grabbed these guys. They were highly rated and awarded, with the major props given for their superior versatility and lightweight feel. I am going to have to put some serious miles in the next three weeks to (hopefully) break them in just in time for my half (the lack of flexibility in the mid-sole is going to make it a challenge to really break in, but I’m going to do my best). Even though I haven’t run long distances in them yet (keep your fingers crossed for me!), they feel pretty fantastic. And, bonus – I didn’t really feel like shelling out $130 for the Salomon Speedcross (the Caddy of all trail-runners), and I found these on sale for $69 (REI and Amazon have some deals right now).

4. Open Wide – Calvin Harris ft. Big Sean

I am obsessed with this song. This was the last song played in Sarah’s spin class this morning, and I totally CRANKED IT, and walked out of spin class with an extra bounce in my step. I added it to my running mix as soon as I got to my car after class (it’s that addicting). What’s better than an “It’s Party Time!” pump up song on a Friday? Answer: nada. You can watch the video here. When you see me standing on the couches, turnin’ clubs into houses, water to champagne fountains… (you’re welcome – I know you want this song in your head, too).

It’s FRIDAY!! *High kicks*

In college, whenever my Little Sister (I was in a sorority) and I got super pumped about something, we would high kick. No matter what circumstance, no matter how out of place that leg up in the air seemed, it would happen. It seems especially appropriate today because I will see her in less than one month from today! And it’s Friday AND it’s Long Run Day! *double high kick*

Smiles, Sunshine & Scarves – the three S’s of a stellar Friday πŸ˜‰

In preparation for Long Run Day, I started my day off with an especially fantastic batch of Tropical Overnight Oats (if I could stick an mini umbrella in my bowl of oats this morning, I would have. It was very deserving of one). It had half of a pomegranate (I was driving the struggle bus trying to get those gorge ruby pom seeds out last night, without destroying them – but I did it!), a whole kiwi, a small handful of coconut flakes, two dates, almond butter and of course – because we can’t do anything around here without adding a little spice to jazz it up, from stews to smoothies – cinnamon, cloves and cardamom (I should literally buy stock in McCormick the way I’m going through cinnamon).

Last night’s maj meal prep struggles. All the best fruits and veggies make you work for it! πŸ˜›

YUM! It was super tasty, and offset the fact that I need to work on my French Press coffee : water ratios to have my coffee not be caffeinated tar (whoops – overzealous scooping this AM).

Breakfast at my desk! Tropical overnight oats with pomegranate, dates, kiwi, coconut, almond butter and trifecta of spices (cinnamon, cloves, cardamom). Def worthy of a cocktail umbrella.

For lunch I have a salad (I pack one just about everyday!) this one has baby kale, baby spinach, red onion, grated carrots, red bell pepper, grape tomatoes and avocado. Because it’s Bagel Friday at the office, I brought a packet of Justin’s Honey Almond Butter to put on my bagel instead of cream cheese (which I will save til lunch – those overnight oats stick with ya!), two apples and dessert – a Chocolate Almond vegan protein bar! So many noms. The Greek yogurt (topped with local honey) is my snack to fight of the hangry at 3 pm. Solidddd.

Well, sh*t.

Today I’ve learned something very important about rest days.

TAKE THEM!

Don’t be like me, think you are unstoppable and tweak your right knee five days before your first half marathon while trying to do dips off a bench for your triceps (yes, an exercise that has nothing really to do with your legs). GAH! I can’t even believe it. Sometimes, that voice in your head – the one that tells you that you can do just ONE more push-up, sometimes it just needs to shut the F up. It’s okay to not be perfect, or the person who leaps out of bed every morning ready to take on the world. It’s okay to be the person who sleeps in a little extra to get the rest they need (and have earned!) and doesn’t care that they didn’t push themselves that extra inch or mile. This mentality is especially important before a big event that you have been working your ass off for. I really should be practicing this soliloquy in front of a mirror right now, but hey. What’s done is done, and hopefully time and rest will make up for my own foolishness.

Let’s shift gears to something a little more fun, shall we? I’d love to share with you the playlist that pumped me up during my 11 mile training run on Sunday. I always love finding new music to run to, and so I thought I’d share my current favorites with you! If you don’t like dance/EDM music, then you should check yo’self and give it another shot.
